Furg Citadel, Defensive citadel in Darmian County, Iran
Furg Citadel is a stone and brick fortress standing at 1,822 meters elevation in South Khorasan Province with eight circular towers and multiple defensive sections. The complex contains separate areas for weapons storage, barracks, stables, water reservoirs, and living quarters connected through a network of underground passages.
Construction of the citadel began under Nader Shah Afshar's reign in the early 18th century and was completed in 1747 under Mirza Rafi Khan's direction. This fortress was built as part of military efforts to secure the region's southern borders during that period.
The structure uses traditional Iranian materials such as saruj mortar, adobe brick, and lime, characteristic of construction methods from the Afsharid era. These craftsmanship techniques are evident throughout the fortress walls and towers.
The site sits on a high plateau, so warm clothing and shoes with good grip are recommended, especially during colder months. Visitors should bring plenty of water and visit early in the day or late afternoon during hot weather to avoid the most intense heat.
The northwest section features a distinctive brick tower decorated with Chalipa patterns that served as both a defensive structure and a dovecote. This dual purpose reveals the practical building approach of the era, where structures needed to fulfill multiple functions.
