Lónsöræfi

Lónsöræfi is a nature reserve encompassing mountain ranges, valleys, and wilderness areas with colorful rhyolite rocks and mineral deposits located east of Vatnajökull glacier. The terrain features diverse landscapes that hikers can explore through multiple established routes across the protected site.

The area became a protected site in 1977 through collaboration between local landowners and the East Iceland Environment Association. This partnership ensured long-term preservation of the landscape and its natural value.

Traditional sheep herding practices from Stafafell farm influenced numerous place names throughout the reserve, reflecting the agricultural heritage of this region.

Mountain huts at Geldingafell, Múlaskáli, and Egilssel provide shelter for visitors hiking through the trails in the reserve. Be prepared for changeable weather and bring proper equipment for mountain conditions.

The rock formations here originated from volcanic activity 5 to 7 million years ago at Kollumúlaeldstöðvar. This ancient geological history makes the reserve a special place to observe how Iceland's landscape has developed over time.
