The Exploration Museum

The Exploration Museum covers human exploration from ancient seafarers to modern space travel, with collections spread across multiple floors. Artifacts, photographs, and displays document different periods of discovery and adventure throughout history.

The museum began in 2011 with a focus on the Apollo program, then expanded significantly in 2014 to include broader exploration history. This growth reflects the region's long-standing connection to discovery and space exploration.

The rooms here display how Vikings ventured across oceans and shaped exploration history through their travels and discoveries. Visitors can see how these journeys continue to define the local identity today.

The museum sits in central Húsavík and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. Plan enough time to walk through the multiple floors and see all the different displays.

The collection includes items from Apollo astronaut training sessions held near Húsavík in the 1960s for lunar missions. These direct connections to the space program explain why this small town became a notable location in the story of moon exploration.
