Kirkjufellsfossar, Triple-tiered waterfall near Mount Kirkjufell in Western Region, Iceland
Kirkjufellsfossar is a three-tiered waterfall near Mount Kirkjufell in Iceland's Western Region. The water descends about 16 meters in three separate cascades into the Kirkjufellsa river.
The original route of Road 54 ran directly over the waterfall area, blocking clear views of the cascades. When the road was relocated, it opened up better viewing access to this natural feature.
The name Kirkjufellsfossar connects this waterfall to the nearby mountain that dominates the landscape. Local communities have worked to maintain access while protecting the natural setting for visitors to experience.
The site sits about 177 kilometers from Reykjavik and is reached via Road 54. Parking areas and viewing platforms are set up to help visitors safely experience the waterfall.
The water originates from Helgrindur volcano, creating three distinct cascades with geometric patterns. These three falls create a striking visual contrast against the triangular peak nearby.
