Gufufoss

Gufufoss is a waterfall near Seyðisfjörður that flows over multiple stone steps of dark volcanic rock, forming white streams of water. The rock formations along the Fjarðará River create a natural stepped cascade that descends in stages.

Volcanic activity and glacial movements over centuries shaped the rock cliffs around the waterfall and created the current cascade system. These geological processes continue to influence the landscape and the waterfall's appearance today.

The name comes from the Icelandic word 'gufa', meaning steam, referring to the constant mist that rises from the cascading water. This fine spray fills the ravine and shapes how people experience the place throughout the seasons.

A marked trail from the parking area on the road between Seyðisfjörður and Egilsstaðir leads directly to the waterfall. The path is easy to find, though the surrounding area is damp and sturdy footwear is recommended for the wet conditions.

The waterfall is part of a system of around 25 cascades along the Fjarðará River that stretch through the valley. This series of falls creates an extensive water network that visitors can explore beyond just this single site.
