Gran Paradiso, Mountain summit in Cogne, Italy

Gran Paradiso rises to an elevation of 4061 meters, making it the highest mountain located entirely within Italian territory in the Aosta Valley.

The first documented ascent of Gran Paradiso occurred in 1860 when English mountaineer Edward Whymper led a successful expedition to reach its peak.

The mountain stands within Gran Paradiso National Park, established to protect local wildlife including the alpine ibex population and maintain traditional mountain lifestyles.

Climbers access the summit through two primary routes, starting from either Rifugio Chabod at 2750 meters or Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II at 2732 meters.

The final section of the climb presents a narrow ridge leading to a summit adorned with a Madonna statue at 4061 meters above sea level.
