Ispra, Research center on Lake Maggiore, Italy
Ispra is a municipality on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in the Province of Varese, surrounded by pine, chestnut, and oak groves. The area sits at about 220 meters elevation and spans several neighborhoods connected by local roads and water transport links.
The name Ispra first appears in documents from 712, possibly derived from the Latin word hispida meaning rocky terrain. The settlement has thus been present for over 1,300 years, showing a long history along the lake's shore.
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre employs scientists from many countries working on environmental and security projects. This international scientific hub has shaped the local community and turned the town into a center for research and knowledge exchange.
The three neighborhoods of Barza, Cascine, and Quassa make up the municipality and are connected by local buses and water taxis across the lake. The lake itself offers an alternative and scenic way to move between different areas.
