Omegna, Lakeside commune in Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Italy
Omegna is a commune at the northern tip of Lake Orta in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. A river runs through the center, dividing the town into two sections connected by several bridges.
The settlement was first documented in writing during the early 13th century, when it already served as a trading point on the lake. Over the course of the 19th century, it developed into a production site for metalware and household goods.
The commune's name may trace back to Celtic times, pointing to a long-standing settlement along the lakeshore. Visitors can see facades from different centuries throughout the town center, especially along the riverbanks, where workshops and shops line the waterfront.
The town can be reached by ferry across Lake Orta, by bus from the direction of Novara, or by train via Novara. Most points of interest are located near the shore and can be easily reached on foot.
The Nigoglia River flows unusually from south to north out of Lake Orta. This makes it one of the few waterways in the region with an opposite direction to most others.
