Capestrano, Mountain commune in Province of L'Aquila, Italy
Capestrano is a commune situated in the Tirino River valley at approximately 465 meters elevation in the Province of L'Aquila. Much of its territory extends into the Gran Sasso National Park, which covers the surrounding mountains.
The settlement takes its name from the Latin 'Caput Trium Amnium' and was transformed into a fortified town centered on a watchtower during the 11th and 12th centuries. This medieval phase established the structure that remains visible today.
The Capestrano Warrior, a statue dating to the 6th century BC, was discovered by a farmer in 1934 and is now displayed in the archaeological museum of Chieti. The sculpture reveals how ancient people in this region honored their warriors and portrayed their way of life.
The area is accessible through highways A24 and A25, which connect it to larger neighboring cities with regular bus services available to surrounding towns. Having a vehicle or using public transportation helps you reach the main sites and explore the wider region.
The San Pietro ad Oratorium Abbey was commissioned by the Lombard king Desiderius in 752 and stands on the banks of the Tirino River. This structure is among the oldest in the region and demonstrates early medieval architectural style.
