Erto e Casso, Mountain commune in Pordenone Province, Italy
Erto e Casso is a mountain commune in Pordenone Province, made up of two separate settlements at 775 meters elevation. The villages lie in the Carnic Prealps and belong to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy.
Documents from the 8th century mention these settlements for the first time in historical records. After 1963, residents left their homes because of the Vajont Dam, but returned from 1966 onward and rebuilt the commune.
People in Erto speak their own Ladin dialect, while in Casso you hear a Venetian dialect from the neighboring region. This linguistic separation reflects how the two settlements developed independently over centuries.
The commune lies about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northwest of Trieste and is reached via National Road 251. Visitors should be prepared for narrow mountain roads and steep climbs.
Residents received a medal for civil courage after they returned to their mountain villages against official prohibitions. Their determination led to the commune being rebuilt despite all warnings.
