Volturara Appula, Mountain commune in Foggia Province, Italy
Volturara Appula is a commune in Foggia Province, located at 510 meters (1,673 feet) elevation in southeastern Italy. The settlement covers roughly 34 square kilometers (13 square miles) and borders several neighboring communes in both Foggia and Campobasso provinces.
The bishopric was recognized in 969 by Pope John XIII and placed under the archdiocese of Benevento. The Romanesque cathedral from the 13th century reflects the ecclesiastical importance of the town during that period.
The 13th-century Apulian Romanesque cathedral features a bell tower containing three bronze bells with significant silver content.
The town sits away from main transport routes and is best reached by car. The small population of fewer than 400 residents means shops and services are limited.
Giuseppe Conte, who served as Italian Prime Minister from 2018 to 2021, was born here. Three bronze bells in the cathedral tower contain a notable amount of silver in their composition.
