Cupra Marittima, Coastal commune in Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy

Cupra Marittima is a commune on the Adriatic coast in the Province of Ascoli Piceno, stretching just above sea level. The landscape combines beaches with rolling terrain covered in vineyards and olive groves.

The site originated around an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the Sabine goddess Cupra. Roman Emperor Hadrian restored this sacred place in 127 AD, confirming its continued importance during his reign.

The archaeological museum displays artifacts from different periods, including calendar fragments, statues, and elaborate frescoes from excavated buildings. The collections span prehistoric, Picena, and Roman times, showing which cultures have shaped this area.

The place is easy to explore on foot, with access points to the beach and local restaurants nearby. Staying in accommodations near the shore provides a good base for exploring nearby archaeological sites.

Recent excavations have uncovered detailed frescoes inside the temple chamber, revealing the advanced craftsmanship of Roman artisans. These wall paintings show how carefully the decoration of these sacred spaces was executed.
