I Gesuiti, Baroque Jesuit church in Cannaregio, Venice, Italy
I Gesuiti is a Baroque church in Venice featuring a two-story facade with eight columns and biblical statues by Venetian sculptors. The building is constructed of brick and displays elaborate exterior ornamentation.
The original church dates to 1148, but was completely rebuilt as a Baroque structure between 1715 and 1729 under architect Domenico Rossi's direction. This transformation created the appearance visitors see today.
The name comes from the Society of Jesus, who commissioned this building. Inside, you'll find religious artworks by Venetian artists that fill the space with color and detailed decoration.
The building is easily reached by public transportation, with the nearest stop at Ca' d'Oro nearby. Plan your visit during opening hours and wear comfortable shoes, as the church sits along Venice's busy pedestrian pathways.
The interior features white and green marble inlays that mimic Venetian textile patterns, even displaying marble curtains over the pulpit. This detailed stonework is unusual in its kind and shows the mastery of Venetian craftsmen.
