Gualtieri

Gualtieri is a commune in the Province of Reggio Emilia characterized by Renaissance design along the Po River valley. The heart of the town centers on Piazza Bentivoglio, ringed by arched porticoes that form a continuous covered passage.

In 1567, Alfonso d'Este granted Gualtieri to Cornelio Bentivoglio, who undertook vast drainage projects. These works reshaped the land and established the framework for the town's organized plan.

The Palazzo Bentivoglio shapes the town with its Documentary Museum and Antonio Ligabue Study Center, showcasing works by the painter who made his home here. His presence over decades left a deep mark on local identity.

The piazza welcomes walkers under its covered arcades, offering shelter from weather while exploring the square. The Palazzo Bentivoglio remains accessible year-round so visitors can wander its halls and view the collections inside.

The Salone dei Giganti in the Palazzo features ceiling frescoes depicting scenes from Torquato Tasso's epic poem Jerusalem Delivered, bringing literary moments to life in paint. These detailed wall paintings offer a rare look at how Renaissance artists visualized a major work of literature.
