Vimercate, Administrative commune in Province of Monza and Brianza, Italy
Vimercate is a commune in the Province of Monza and Brianza in Lombardy, located about twelve miles northeast of Milan. The town has around 26,000 residents and covers an area with residential streets, shopping districts, and several public parks along the Molgora River.
The settlement began in Roman times as a marketplace called Vicus Mercati and grew during the Middle Ages into a trading post on the road between Milan and Bergamo. By the 13th century it had its own statutes and remained an important stopping point for travelers and merchants until the 19th century.
Local traditions manifest through seasonal festivals, art exhibitions at municipal venues, and community gatherings that maintain connections among residents throughout the year.
The municipal offices are located in the historical center where most public services and facilities are concentrated. The center can be explored on foot, but reaching other parts of the commune requires a bicycle or vehicle.
The name comes directly from the Latin expression for marketplace and still reflects the old role of the settlement as a trading location. This connection to the past shows in the old street names and buildings in the center.
