Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, 19th century cemetery in Staglieno district, Genoa, Italy

The cemetery spans over one square kilometer of hillside terrain, featuring hundreds of marble sculptures, colonnades, and a central Pantheon replica.

Following Napoleon's 1804 Edict of Saint-Cloud prohibiting urban burials, architects Carlo Barabino and Giovanni Battista Resasco designed this cemetery, which opened in 1851.

The cemetery contains graves of notable figures including Giuseppe Mazzini, Fabrizio De André, and sculptures by prominent artists like Leonardo Bistolfi and Giulio Monteverde.

Visitors can access the cemetery by taking bus number 34 from Genoa's Stazione Principe and explore the grounds through marked pathways and guided tours.

The Appiani family tomb, featuring Demetrio Paernio's detailed grief sculptures, gained international recognition when it appeared on Joy Division's album 'Closer'.
