Porto Venere

The village stretches along a rocky peninsula with multicolored houses facing the harbor and the Church of St. Peter standing on a promontory.

The settlement originated as Portus Veneris in the first century BC, named after a temple to Venus located where the Church of St. Peter now stands.

The annual Palio del Golfo maritime procession takes place in August, featuring traditional boat races and ceremonies honoring the White Madonna.

Visitors can reach Porto Venere by regular boat services from La Spezia or by taking public buses that connect to neighboring coastal towns.

The Doria Castle, constructed in the 12th century, served as a political prison during the Napoleonic period and offers views across the Gulf of Poets.
