Mühlbacher Stausee, reservoir
Mühlbacher Stausee is a reservoir in South Tyrol where the Pustertal and Eisacktal valleys meet. The water is fed by the Rienz River and covers about 26 hectares, bordered by green hills and rocky formations.
The reservoir was built in 1940 to generate electricity and strengthen the region's energy supply. The dam collects water from the Rienz River and supplies power to a hydroelectric plant near Brixen.
The local people maintain a traditional connection to the land and water that surrounds them. Small farms and pastures scattered around show how residents have long integrated themselves into this landscape.
The reservoir is free to visit year-round and accessible by car with nearby parking. Walking paths around the water are easy to navigate and suitable for most visitors, especially during spring and summer months.
The municipal border between Mühlbach and Rodeneck runs directly through the water itself. This unusual division makes the lake a geographical quirk where two municipalities share the same body of water.
