Cattolica is a coastal commune on the Adriatic in Rimini province, Emilia-Romagna. The beach stretches several kilometers along the shoreline and offers sandy sections with gentle slopes that descend gradually into the sea.
During Roman times a rest station arose at this spot along Via Flaminia, providing travelers with shelter and food. In the Middle Ages the settlement developed into a fishing village before becoming a seaside resort in the 20th century.
Via Flaminia once passed through this area and shaped the place name, which refers to a roadside inn on the ancient Roman road. Visitors today can walk along the waterfront promenade and watch fishermen mending nets or preparing catches for local restaurants.
Motorway A14 connects the commune with cities in northern Italy and further south, while Rimini airport lies just a few kilometers away. Those arriving in summer should plan for early morning or late afternoon, when coastal roads are less busy.
The site of the saltwater aquarium arose in a former naval facility from the early 19th century and preserves the old building shapes around the modern tanks. The dolphin and shark enclosures sit between historic walls and planted courtyards that are now open to visitors.
