Ribera

Ribera is a town in the Province of Agrigento that sits on rolling hills between two river valleys at an elevation of 223 meters. The settlement is defined by its position in a fertile agricultural area known for growing oranges, strawberries, and grapes.

The town was founded in 1627 by Prince Luigi Moncada and named after his wife Maria Fan de Ribera during Spanish rule over Sicily. The establishment was part of the inland territory's development under local aristocratic control.

The main church with its Baroque facade dominates the town center and serves as a natural landmark for those walking through the narrow streets. The building reflects how the community has long gathered around this religious center.

The town is best explored on foot since the compact layout with stairs and narrow pathways makes driving difficult. The cooler months are ideal for visiting, as the area can become quite hot during summer.

Near the town lies the Bronze Age Anguilla necropolis with around 30 tombs carved directly into the rock. These ancient burial sites date back to the 13th century BC and reveal how long this area has been inhabited.
