Portinari Chapel, Renaissance chapel in Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio, Milan, Italy
The Portinari Chapel features a ribbed dome, marble sepulcher, and extensive frescoes depicting scenes from Saint Peter of Verona's life by artist Vincenzo Foppa.
Built between 1462 and 1468 by banker Pigello Portinari, the chapel houses the head of Saint Peter of Verona within an elaborate marble shrine from 1336.
The frescoes narrate Saint Peter of Verona's encounters with Cathars, including the revelation of a false apparition of Mary and Jesus during religious meetings.
The chapel requires a separate entrance fee of 6 euros and remains inaccessible during Sunday mass services at the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio.
The chapel contains a donor portrait from 1462 showing Pigello Portinari kneeling before Saint Peter, connected to stories of the saint appearing in Portinari's dreams.
