The Lapis Niger is an ancient shrine in the Roman Forum.

The shrine dates back to the earliest history of the city, possibly as far back as the kingdom of Romulus.

It is believed to be a memorial for a king who was killed and became a god.

Today, it can be visited in the open-air museum of the Roman Forum.

Its name, 'Black Stone', comes from its black marble slab.
