Lapis Niger, Ancient shrine in Roman Forum, Italy
The Lapis Niger consists of a square-shaped black marble pavement located at the boundary between the Forum and the Comitium in Rome.
Excavations beneath the pavement revealed a sanctuary from the archaic period with inscriptions dating to the sixth century BCE, marking early Roman civilization.
The site contains one of the earliest known Old Latin inscriptions carved in stone blocks, providing insights into the development of Latin language.
Visitors can observe the black marble pavement and ancient inscriptions protected by a wooden roof within the Roman Forum archaeological complex.
The stone inscriptions appear written in boustrophedon style, alternating direction with each line, and mention potential curses against those who disturb the site.
