Caprera, Mediterranean island in La Maddalena Archipelago, Italy.
Caprera is the second-largest island in the Maddalena Archipelago with granite cliffs and several white sand beaches along its shores. A 600-meter causeway connects it to the neighboring island of La Maddalena.
Giuseppe Garibaldi purchased half the island in 1855 and built Casa Bianca, where he lived until 1882. His residence made the place an important location in Italian historical memory.
The Garibaldi compound reflects the life of the Italian patriot through preserved rooms, furniture, and objects he used daily. Walking through these spaces gives a sense of how he spent his final years on the island.
The island is walkable with marked paths connecting beaches and viewpoints throughout. Basic facilities exist in some areas, but it's wise to bring water and supplies with you.
At Spiaggia del Relitto beach, the wooden remains of the motorsailer Trebbo sit partially submerged after sinking in 1922. This shipwreck remains visible and tells a story of the area's maritime past.
