Venice Marco Polo Airport, International airport in Tessera, Italy.
Venice Marco Polo Airport is an international airport on the mainland near the village of Tessera northeast of Venice. The facility has two asphalt runways and a terminal with arrival and departure areas.
The facility opened for operations in 1960 and replaced the earlier seaplane base on the Lido. It took its name in honor of the Venetian merchant who traveled to Asia in the thirteenth century.
Travelers enter the departure hall beneath an exposed wooden roof structure that recalls traditional Venetian building techniques. Local materials and colors shape the design and create a quiet waiting environment.
Buses run directly from the terminal to Piazzale Roma while water taxis and scheduled boats go to the islands. Connections to the rail network are available through the main train station.
The runway runs parallel to the Venetian lagoon and gives arriving guests an early view of the islands from above. Waiting passengers can watch aircraft movements through large windows.
