Theatre of Pompey, Roman theatre in Campo Marzio, Italy
The theatre featured a vast semicircular auditorium with a diameter of 150 meters and offered seating for 17,500 spectators through multiple arched entrances.
Pompey built this permanent stone theatre in 55 BC by incorporating a temple to Venus Victrix at the top of the cavea to bypass Roman laws.
The structure contained a senate meeting hall called Curia Pompeii, where Julius Caesar met his fate at the base of Pompey's statue in 44 BC.
The theatre remains are visible in the basements of noble palaces between Campo de' Fiori and Torre Argentina in modern Rome.
The building included a large quadriporticus with granite columns extending to the sacred area, providing shelter for audiences between performances.
