Palazzo della Canonica, building in Pisa, Italy

Welcome to Pisa, Italy! As your tourist guide, I am excited to take you on a tour of the historic Canonica building located in the Piazza dei Cavalieri. The Canonica building is a historical palace that was built in 1566 by architect David Fortini. It replaced a series of pre-existing medieval buildings and was designed by Giorgio Vasari as part of the new layout for the Piazza dei Cavalieri. The building underwent several renovations and expansions until the 17th century. The decoration of the building is rather simple and forms the backdrop on the south side of the square, next to the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. The palace was originally intended for the knight-priests of the Order of Saint Stephen. Today, it has a reddish plaster finish, and the stone portal stands out with its rustic appearance. If you are interested in learning more about the history of the Canonica building and the Piazza dei Cavalieri, I recommend reading "La chiesa di Santo Stefano e la piazza dei Cavalieri" by Stefano Sodi and Stefano Renzoni, which can be found in the book "Mirabilia Pisana" published by Edizioni ETS in 2003. While visiting the Piazza dei Cavalieri, be sure to take in the stunning architecture of the surrounding buildings, including the Palazzo della Carovana and the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee or a gelato at one of the many cafes in the area. Thank you for choosing me as your tourist guide. I hope you enjoy your visit to the Canonica building and the beautiful city of Pisa.
