Castle Bruneck, Medieval castle in Bruneck, Italy
Castle Bruneck is a medieval stone fortress set on a hill above the town of Bruneck in South Tyrol, northern Italy. It features defensive walls, several gates, and a central courtyard with Gothic architectural elements.
Prince Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg had the fortress built in 1276 and used it as a summer residence. For several centuries it served as an administrative center for the church in the surrounding region.
The museum inside the castle presents the daily lives of mountain peoples from around the world, from the Andes to the Himalayas. Visitors can see tools, clothing, and objects that show how communities adapt to life at high altitude.
The museum inside is mainly open from May through November, when visiting conditions are best. In winter the opening days are reduced, so it is worth checking before you go.
In 2011, glass and steel structures were inserted into the medieval building without altering its original core. The contrast between the old stonework and the modern additions is clearly visible from the courtyard.
