Cerreto Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Abbadia Cerreto, Italy
The abbey features a medieval structure with three naves, reflecting its religious purpose through architectural elements and traditional construction techniques.
Founded in 1084 by Benedictines, the monastery transferred to Cistercian monks in 1139 and later became a parish church when monk numbers decreased.
The monastery influenced the development of Abbadia Cerreto to such an extent that the town adopted its name from the religious institution.
Located at coordinates 45°18'41.702"N and 9°35'42.616"E, the abbey remains open for visits and religious ceremonies in the Lombardy region.
In 1801, the Napoleonic government sold the abbey's assets to Marchese Giorgio Teodoro Trivulzio, changing its ownership structure permanently.
