Shrine of Nostra Signora della Guardia

The Shrine of Nostra Signora della Guardia is a Renaissance Revival basilica crowning Monte Figogna in Ceranesi. The structure spans considerable dimensions and rises prominently against the skyline.

The initial construction began following a Marian apparition that Benedetto Pareto reported in 1490. This vision marked the beginning of a venerated shrine that drew pilgrims across centuries.

Frescoes by Antonio Santagata from 1963 decorate the interior with scenes from the Virgin Mary's life. These artworks remain central to the spiritual experience inside.

The shrine sits roughly 20 kilometers from Genoa and occupies an elevated position, so sturdy footwear is helpful for the climb. Guest accommodations are available for pilgrims and visitors planning to stay longer.

On clear days, visitors can see the Mediterranean coastline extending to Corsica and even glimpse Matterhorn peaks from the shrine. This exceptional panorama across sea and mountains makes the visit memorable.
