Garden of Ninfa, Protected botanical garden in Cisterna di Latina, Italy.
The Garden of Ninfa is a protected botanical reserve in Cisterna di Latina, located between Rome and Naples. Medieval towers and walls rise among streams, wild roses, and old trees.
A Roman settlement with a temple arose here in ancient times, later growing into a medieval town. In the 16th century residents left the place because of malaria, and the ruins sank into nature.
The name comes from a Roman temple dedicated to water nymphs, whose remains are still visible among the plants. Today visitors experience a place where medieval ruins meet English landscape design.
The area is accessible only through guided visits, which take place from April to November. Early reservation is recommended since the number of visitors per day is limited.
More than a thousand plant varieties grow among the old stones, and over 150 bird species use the place as a resting point during their journey between Africa and Europe. Migratory birds find water and shelter here amid the rural plain.
