Garden of Ninfa, Protected botanical garden in Cisterna di Latina, Italy.

The Garden of Ninfa extends across 105 hectares, featuring medieval ruins surrounded by watercourses, oak trees, cypress groves, and climbing roses on stone walls.

The site originated as a Roman settlement with a temple to nymphs, later developed into a medieval town before its abandonment in the 16th century due to malaria.

The Caetani family transformed the ruins into a garden in the 1920s, incorporating English landscaping principles while preserving the medieval architectural elements.

Visitors can access the garden from April to November through guided tours priced at 15 euros for adults, with advance booking required due to limited availability.

The garden contains over 1,000 plant varieties and serves as a critical stopping point for birds migrating between Africa and Europe, hosting 152 different species.

Historical sites in Italy away from tourist paths

Italy contains historical sites away from regular destinations. Cliffs host villages, ancient ruins mark the landscape and monasteries hide in nature. Underground Roman houses, cave churches with frescoes and medieval gardens document history. The architecture and culture of different periods unite at each location.
