Caetani Castle, Medieval fortress in Sermoneta, Italy

Caetani Castle is a medieval fortress in Sermoneta with thick stone walls and defensive towers positioned to protect the settlement below. The structure displays the typical layout of a fortified residence from this period, with multiple levels and rooms built within the defensive perimeter.

The fortress was founded by the Annibaldi family in the 13th century and later came under the control of the Caetani family, which shaped its development. This change in ownership reflected the political shifts happening in the region during medieval times.

The Camere Pinte, three guest rooms, hold frescoes attributed to the school of Pinturicchio, showing mythological figures and the theological virtues. In the Casa del Cardinale hangs Girolamo Siciolante's 1541 Madonna with Child and Saints Peter, Stephen and John, moved here from Valvisciolo Abbey. A wall in one hall keeps the engraved signatures of distinguished visitors, among them a musical staff carved by composer Roffredo Caetani.

The castle is open to visitors through guided tours offered at set times, lasting roughly an hour per group. It is best to check in advance about available times, as access depends on when tours are scheduled.

Inside the keep, the lord's original canopy bed is still preserved. On a wall of one hall, the stave of composer Roffredo Caetani remains engraved among the signatures of illustrious visitors. Local tradition holds that the spirit of a young jester, a relative of Boniface VIII executed on his orders, still plays tricks in the town.
