Concordia 2000, Peace bell at Plan de Corones summit, South Tyrol, Italy
Concordia 2000 is a peace bell placed at the top of Plan de Corones in South Tyrol, at roughly 7,460 feet (2,275 meters) above sea level. It sits on a crown-shaped base decorated with reliefs showing mountain motifs, and was cast by the Oberascher foundry.
The bell project was started by Erich Kastlunger as part of millennium celebrations and was completed in 2003. It was conceived by its designer Paul de Doss-Moroder as a personal gesture of peace at the turn of the new millennium.
The bell carries a Latin inscription expressing a prayer for peace, reminding visitors of its purpose each time they pass by. At noon, its sound spreads across the summit and briefly interrupts the flow of hikers and skiers.
The summit of Plan de Corones is reached by gondolas that run in both winter and summer seasons. Mornings tend to be less crowded, so visiting early in the day gives a quieter experience around the bell.
Although Plan de Corones is mainly known as a ski area, the bell rings every day at noon regardless of the season. This daily signal reaches both skiers on the slopes in winter and hikers on the summit in summer.
