Castle Untermontani, Medieval castle in Morter, South Tyrol.

Castle Untermontani is a medieval fortress near Morter in South Tyrol, featuring remains of a drawbridge mechanism, main entrance gate, and fortified walls positioned along the valley slopes. The structure includes several building elements spread across the site that demonstrate the practical layout of a defensive stronghold.

The castle emerged as a stronghold during the Middle Ages and was controlled by the counts of Annenberg in the 1300s. Over the centuries, flooding and erosion from the nearby Plima River gradually damaged the western sections, causing parts to collapse.

This fortress displays features typical of South Tyrolean defensive architecture from the medieval period, reflecting how communities built fortifications to protect their valleys.

The site is accessible by taking the main road toward Coldrano, then following signs toward Val Martello and the village of Morter. Walking paths lead to the ruins, and sturdy footwear is helpful since the terrain can be steep and uneven in places.

The ruins bear visible marks of water damage on their walls, caused by centuries of exposure to the nearby Plima River. These erosion patterns serve as a clear reminder of how natural forces gradually shaped and weakened the structure over time.
