Castle Moos-Schulthaus

Castle Moos-Schulthaus is a historic residence in the wine region that features a three-story residential tower surrounded by farm buildings and set on a slope above vineyards. The entire complex integrates living quarters with agricultural structures that work together as a single estate.

The castle began as a small fortification in the 13th century and later became the home of the Von Schulthaus family, who received it through marriage when the original noble line ended. This transfer of ownership shaped the property for centuries to follow.

The castle displays rooms with Gothic details and medieval work tools alongside 15th-century frescoes that show the unusual theme of Cats and Mice Wars next to the Tree of Abundance. These uncommon artistic scenes are visible throughout the historic interior spaces.

The castle is only accessible by advance reservation for guided tours available Tuesday through Sunday, and mornings are the best time to visit to enjoy natural light in the historic rooms. Sturdy footwear is recommended because the path to the castle crosses uneven ground.

The Walther Amonn Foundation offers art workshops where visitors learn about how medieval colors were made and create their own paintings inspired by the castle's frescoes. This hands-on experience with historical craftsmanship techniques stays with many who visit.
