Säben Abbey, Religious complex on Säben Mountain in Klausen, Italy
Säben Abbey is a monastery complex on a mountain near Klausen, consisting of multiple buildings arranged across different elevation levels. Overlooking the Eisack Valley, stone structures from various periods stand together here.
The site served as the bishop's seat of the Diocese of Säben from the 6th to 10th centuries before the diocese moved to Brixen around 1000. This relocation marked a turning point in the region's history.
The monastery carries on a long tradition of spiritual life through the communities that currently live here. The different churches show how faith and building styles became intertwined over many centuries.
Visitors reach this monastery on foot using walking paths from the village of Klausen below, with two route options available. The easier path takes more time to cover, while the steeper route gets there faster.
After more than 300 years under Benedictine nuns, a new group of Cistercian monks arrived in 2024 to continue the work here. This change marks a new chapter for the spiritual mission of this place.
