Monte Civetta, Alpine mountain peak in Province of Belluno, Italy
Monte Civetta is an Alpine peak in the Province of Belluno that rises to around 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). Its north-western side features a dramatic vertical rock face towering over 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) tall and stretching several kilometers across.
The mountain was first recorded to be summited in 1855 when Simeone di Silvestro reached the peak. This marked an early successful climb of a major Dolomite summit.
The mountain's name may come from a Latin word for city, referring to its tower-like shape above Alleghe, or from regional stories about owls. You hear these tales and names woven through the local communities around it.
The mountain is served by around 48 ski runs in areas including Alleghe, Selva di Cadore, Palafavera, and Zoldo, making up the largest ski resort in Veneto. Visitors should expect different access points and gear requirements depending on the season.
Lake Coldai, a high-altitude lake, was formed by ancient glacial activity and sits among the rocky landscape of the mountain. The spot carries local legends that people in the region still tell today.
