Alta Via 1

This 75-mile (120-kilometer) trail runs from Lago di Braies to La Pissa near Belluno, crossing mountain passes, alpine meadows, and rocky limestone terrain over 9 to 11 days of hiking.

The route passes through areas marked by World War I history, where hikers can see remnants of trenches, tunnels, and fortifications built during intense mountain battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces.

The Dolomites region reflects a blend of Italian, Austrian, and Ladin influences, with many villages displaying dual-language names and local cuisine combining flavors from all three cultural traditions in mountain huts along the trail.

Hikers must book mountain refuges well in advance, typically 6 to 9 months before traveling, and the trail operates from mid-June to late September, with August offering the most reliable weather conditions for trekking.

The trail features the Galleria Lagazuoi tunnels, underground passages carved during wartime that now serve as a historical hiking route requiring torches to navigate through narrow sections secured with steel cables.
