Parco Archeologico di Castelseprio - Museo - Santa Maria foris portas

The Santa Maria foris portas church features a trifoil floor plan with an apse decorated by Medieval frescoes depicting religious narratives.

The church survived the 1287 destruction of Castelseprio by Ottone Visconti, while the surrounding fortress and settlement were completely demolished.

The frescoes within the church display narrative sequences of Christ's early life across three registers, executed in a refined Byzantine style.

Visitors can explore both the church and the archaeological park, which includes remnants of the Roman fortification and a small museum.

The church contains rare 9th-century frescoes discovered in 1944 beneath a layer of 15th-century plaster, showing the Trial by Bitter Water.
