San Giovanni Evangelista, Ruined Early Christian basilica in Castelseprio, Italy

San Giovanni Evangelista was the main religious complex of the Roman, later Lombard, castrum of Castelseprio, comprising the basilica and an octagonal baptistery of Early Christian origin. In the 7th century the Lombards radically rebuilt both buildings and used them inside and outside as burial places for local notables. Only ruins remain today.

The church was built in the early medieval period when Castelseprio served as a military stronghold in northern Italy. Its construction reflects how new architectural traditions took hold in the region after Roman times ended.

The church shows how Roman building styles merged into the new methods that developed in medieval Lombardy. You can see on the walls and arches how construction techniques changed during this period.

The ruin sits within an archaeological park where you can explore the remains and read the explanatory panels provided. It makes sense to allow time to see the different areas of the park and understand how the site developed over time.

The basilica and its octagonal baptistery were used by the Lombards in the 7th century as burial places for local notables, inside and outside the buildings. Both survived the destruction of the castrum by the Visconti in the late 13th century, but later fell into ruin.
