Rittner Horn, Mountain peak in South Tyrol, Italy
Rittner Horn is the highest summit of the Renon High Plateau in South Tyrol, Italy, sitting at about 2,260 meters above sea level. It is reached by cable car and on foot, and from the top the surrounding Alpine ranges are visible in several directions.
In the mid-20th century the first ski lifts were installed on the mountain, gradually opening it to winter sports. That early infrastructure shaped the tourism that continues to define the area today.
The mountain huts on the slopes serve South Tyrolean dishes like Schlutzkrapfen and Speckknödel, which have been part of local cooking for generations. Visitors can stop there to rest and try regional food that is hard to find elsewhere.
A cable car runs from the valley to the summit station and operates even in poor weather, making the trip straightforward in most conditions. The warmer months are good for walking, but the mountain can be visited year-round.
The Panorama Trail on this mountain was Italy's first certified winter hiking path, winding through snow-covered ground. This means visitors can explore the summit in winter without any skiing equipment.
