Badia di Sant'Andrea, Cistercian abbey in Sestri Ponente district, Genoa, Italy.
Badia di Sant'Andrea is a Cistercian abbey in western Genoa located at the base of Erzelli hill between Cornigliano and Sestri Ponente districts. The complex displays Gothic architectural features and is built with traditional stone construction throughout its monastic structures.
The monastery was founded around 1100 and became Italy's second Cistercian community, following Abbey Santa Maria alla Croce di Tiglieto in sequence. Over centuries it changed hands repeatedly and underwent various transformations as local noble families took control.
The monastery served as shelter for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land and later housed members of powerful Genoese families like the Fregoso and Fieschi, who managed the grounds.
The site is located in western Genoa near public transportation but is currently closed to visitors as it functions as private property. You should inquire ahead before attempting a visit, as access may be limited or unavailable.
The site was acquired in 2022 by 777 Partners, who plan to transform it into a training facility and dormitory for Genoa Football Club's academy. This conversion reflects how historic buildings find new purposes in contemporary urban settings.
