Holy Face of Lucca, Medieval crucifix in Lucca Cathedral, Italy
The wooden Holy Face of Lucca stands 265 centimeters tall and depicts Christ with long hair, a mustache, and open round eyes inside the cathedral.
The crucifix emerged from concealment around 782 CE when it arrived at the Italian coast and was transported to Lucca by oxen without human guidance.
The Luminara di Santa Croce procession takes place each September 13th, with buildings illuminated by candles as participants walk through city streets.
Visitors can view the Holy Face inside the octagonal marble chapel within San Martino Cathedral, with special access granted during September celebrations.
Medieval legend states Nicodemus carved the body but fell asleep before completing the face, which appeared miraculously when he woke up.
