Sacred Mount Calvary of Domodossola, Religious heritage site on Mattarella Hill, Domodossola, Italy.
The Sacred Mount Calvary is a religious site on Mattarella Hill in Domodossola featuring fifteen chapels positioned along a stone-paved path through dense woodland. The path climbs to a church at the summit, where the Casa Madre and other religious buildings stand.
Construction of the sanctuary began in 1656 to create a Via Crucis, a pilgrimage route with stations commemorating the Passion of Christ. In 1828, Antonio Rosmini, a priest and philosopher, founded the Casa Madre of his religious community at the summit.
The site serves as a spiritual center for Rosminians, who conduct international postulancy activities and religious ceremonies throughout the year. The community actively uses the buildings and grounds for their spiritual practice and educational work.
The grounds are located near Domodossola's railway station and offer wheelchair accessibility throughout the main areas. The visit allows you to explore both the religious buildings and the surrounding natural landscape.
The grounds incorporate ruins of the medieval Mattarella Castle and contain a botanical garden within a protected natural landscape. This nature reserve was formally established in 1991 to preserve the diversity of regional plant life.
