Giants of Mont'e Prama, Archaeological site in Cabras, Sardinia.
The Giants of Mont'e Prama are a group of sandstone sculptures discovered in Sardinia and now displayed in museums. Each figure measures about two meters tall and shows fighters with weapons and protective equipment.
A farmer plowing a field near Cabras in 1974 uncovered a large stone head. Excavation then brought thousands of fragments to light that were later reassembled.
The warriors reflect a society that honored its ancestors through stone monuments placed near burial sites. The figures hold round shields and bows in poses that remain easy to read after thousands of years.
The museum in Cabras displays most of the statues alongside other finds from the same period. A portion of the collection is housed in the archaeological museum of Cagliari.
Reassembling more than five thousand stone pieces took years and turned countless fragments into a complete group. Some parts fit together so precisely that the broken edges lock like puzzle pieces.
