Duino Castle

Duino Castle is a medieval fortification perched on limestone cliffs above the Gulf of Trieste, with two distinct building sections connected by a residential wing. The interior museum displays historical objects and furnishings that tell the story of life within these walls over centuries.

Construction of the present fortress began in 1389 under the Wallsee family on the site of an earlier Roman military installation. Over the centuries, successive owners modified and expanded the structure to meet changing needs and circumstances.

The castle served as a gathering place for artists and writers in the early 20th century, who stayed within its elegant rooms. Visitors can still see the halls and chambers where these guests worked and spent their time.

The fortress is reachable by a paved path from the nearby village and offers views across the coast and the karst hills beyond. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the approach to the cliffs is steep and the interior rooms span multiple levels.

Beneath the castle lies a large bunker carved into the rock by the German navy during World War II. This underground structure remains visible today and serves as a reminder of the turbulent 1940s in this region.
