Duino Castle, Medieval castle in Duino-Aurisina, Italy.
The fortification stands on limestone cliffs above the Gulf of Trieste, featuring two distinct sections connected by a wing containing residential quarters.
Construction of the current castle began in 1389 under the Wallsee family, built upon the site of an earlier Roman military outpost.
Rainer Maria Rilke wrote the first drafts of his Duino Elegies while staying at the castle in 1912 as a guest of Princess Marie.
The castle museum displays 18 rooms containing historical artifacts, including an 1810 forte-piano used by composer Franz Liszt during his visits.
A 400-square-meter bunker, constructed in 1943 by the German navy, extends 18 meters deep beneath the castle grounds.
