Lido degli Estensi, human settlement in Comacchio, Province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Lido degli Estensi is a beach settlement in the municipality of Comacchio, in Emilia-Romagna, sitting along a long stretch of Adriatic sandy shore. Its main street, Viale Carducci, runs parallel to the sea and is lined with hotels, shops, and restaurants that form the core of the resort.
The settlement takes its name from the Este family, who ruled Ferrara and the surrounding territory until the late 16th century. The resort itself grew during the 20th century, as organized beach tourism became popular along the Italian Adriatic coast.
The name of this settlement points to the Este family, the rulers who once governed this coastal region and whose legacy is still felt in local place names. Along the main street, bars and restaurants fill with visitors every summer, turning the area into a social hub for younger crowds.
The resort is easy to reach by car from Ferrara or Bologna, and works well for either a day trip or a longer stay. Visiting outside the peak summer season makes it easier to find parking and to move around the beach and town without crowds.
Along the canal leading to the neighboring port of Porto Garibaldi, the Marina degli Estensi offers moorings for boats of many sizes and draws sailors from across the northern Adriatic. From here, it is possible to explore the lagoons and waterways around Comacchio by boat, which gives a very different view of the area than the beach does.
