Abbazia di San Salvatore

Abbazia di San Salvatore is a Gothic church in Fucecchio with a wide central nave, lateral altars in Vasarian style, and a sturdy bell tower at the rear. The interior displays characteristic Gothic architecture that was maintained during the reconstruction of the building.

The abbey was founded by Count Cadolo near the Arno River in 986 and relocated to Salamarzana hill after a devastating flood in 1106 destroyed its original location. The rebuilding shaped its present structure and position.

The church preserves a notable wooden crucifix from the 16th century, displayed alongside a canvas depicting Christ on the cross with religious figures. These artworks reflect the devotional practices and artistic expression that have been maintained here over the centuries.

The church is open to visitors and is maintained by the Poor Clares sisters as an active religious center. Keep in mind that it functions as a place of worship and visits should be approached respectfully.

The building houses a rare organ from 1626 crafted by Lucchese artisans Andrea and Cosimo Ravani, representing local instrument-making traditions. This organ stands as a testament to the level of craftsmanship that was common in Tuscany at that time.
