Santa Reparata, Benedictine abbey in Marradi, Italy
Santa Reparata, also known as Badia del Borgo or Badia di Marradi, is a Benedictine abbey in Marradi, Italy. The complex features a medieval bell tower, a Baroque facade, and a completely renovated interior from the 18th century, with large altars and contemporary paintings.
Documented as a Benedictine monastery in 1025, it joined the Vallombrosan congregation in 1090 and was suppressed in the 19th century. The church was restored in the 15th century and completely renovated in the 18th century.
The abbey is dedicated to Saint Reparata, a early Christian martyr, and houses paintings by the Master of Marradi, a local artist influenced by Florentine art. The church remains a place of worship for the community, with masses and religious events held regularly.
The abbey is located in the hamlet of Badia del Borgo, a short distance from the center of Marradi. Visitors can explore the church and its artworks, but should check local opening times as it is a subsidiary church.
The abbey's bell tower gives it the appearance of a fortress rather than a monastery. It houses a painting by the Master of Marradi commissioned by Abbot Taddeo Adimari, who was exiled from Florence due to conflicts with Lorenzo the Magnificent.
